History:
New York Central’s 4-6-4 Hudson was the most famous class of locomotive in the world. The reason was twofold. First, there was the proportionate beauty in Central’s penchant for straight line design and second was that they hauled the most famous Limiteds at the peak of rail passenger travel in America.

Of the 275 Hudsons built for the NYC, there is one that stands out as the most famous. It was the last J1e built (November 1931) number 5344. Mechanically, 5344 (and 5343) were different from the J1 fleet in that they had roller bearings on all engine and tender axles except for engine trailing truck.

5344 received the first streamlined shroud applied to a steam locomotive in America. It was named Commodore Vanderbilt. In 1939, her original shroud was replaced with the then popular Dreyfuss streamlining. Through all this she kept her original number 5344.

About 1933, toy maker Joshua Lionel Cowen, approached Central with his plan for a scale O model of their famous Hudson type. The New York Central recommended No. 5344. Without a doubt, No 5344 is the most famous locomotive in the world.
