G AL87-172 D&RGW K-28 is a product of the American Locomotive Works (ALCO). It was delivered to the Denver & Rio Grande Western in 1923. A total of ten K-28''s (470-479) were purchased to assist the very successful by now severely overworked K-27''s.

Since the delivery of the K-27''s in 1903 the technology and complexity of steam locomotive had advanced considerably. Therefore the K-28 although similar in size to the K-27 is a much more advanced piece of equipment. A long “leisurely visual tour” of your new Accucraft K-28 will allow you to spot many of these advanced features all faithfully modeled on your new locomotive.

When delivered these locomotives were assigned to the Gunnison Division, and although they did occasionally pull freight trains, they were most often found at the head of a "varnish" or passenger train. During World War II, seven of the K-28 class were requisitioned by the U.S. Army and shipped to Skagway Alaska to run on the White Pass and Yukon Railroad. After the end of the war these locomotives were returned to the states of Washington and Utah to be scrapped.

However, the good news is that three (473, 476 & 478) of the original D&RGW K-28 class are still in existence and are now under the ownership of the Durango & Silverton Railroad. They are still running over the same rails as they did almost eighty years ago climbing towards Silverton along the banks of the Rio de Las Animas Perdidas.

G AL87-242 The K-37''s were originally built as standard gauge 2-8-0''s by Baldwin in 1902 Ten of these engines were converted to narrow gauge between 1928 to 1930 by the D&RGW. New chassis were created, and the boilers and tenders were used over again on the narrow gauge versions. D&RGW numbered these engines 490 to 499, and most survive today on display. These engines were not as popular as the K-36''s. The reason for this was the K-36 was easier on the crews and the track as well. However in model form the K-37 is the largest locomotive that can be built in 1:20.3 scale The huge boiler allows runs of well over an hour without ever injecting water. This new Live Steam version is also cross ported so that valve gear is in prototypical position for forward and reverse. This large model is extremely powerful , but unlike the prototype is very easy and rewarding to run.

1 AL97-005 GS-5 SP #4458, LIVE STEAM
Southern Pacific GS 4-8-4 locomotives ran from class GS -1 through GS-8 The Daylight painted locomotives were GS-2 though GS-5! The GS-4’s were the double headlight versions, and the last two of this series were made with roller bearings. These were class GS-5. No. 4458 was equipped with Timken roller bearings and No. 4459 used SKF roller bearings. Both these engines ran well over one million miles during their careers, and both Timken and SKF wanted to examine the bearings on both engines when they were scrapped! Both locomotives showed minimal wear after all those miles! No. 4458 lasted in service the longest and could be found in black paint pulling the valley daylight until late 1956! Pentrex video has some wonderful DVD color movies of this engine running at high speed in those last years! GS-5 #4458 was the pinnacle of steam power on the Southern Pacific.

G E20-3 I.O.M. 0-6-0 CALEDONIA #15 (Electric)
Caledonia was built in 1885 by Dubs & Co. for the 3′ gauge Manx Northern Railway. The M.N.R. needed a powerful loco for working coal trains on the Foxdale branch. In 1895 she was shipped by sea to Laxey to work on the construction of the Snaefell Mountain Railway. In 1904 the M.N.R. was absorbed by the Isle of Man Railway Co. who found a variety of uses for her including working to the internees’ camp in Peel during WW1 and for various contractors employed in public works, as well as market day cattle trains and snow-ploughing.

This model is based on No 15 ‘Caledonia’ as now running on the Isle of Man Railway. Versions are available based on ‘Caledonia’ as Manx Northern No 4 in Tuscan Red as running in 2008, in blue as running in 2004 or Indian Red as running in 1964.

1 G732-01 USRA 0-6-0 VANDERBILT TENDER, LIVE STEAM, AML (AMERICAN MAINLINE)

The United States Railroad Administration was set up in response to a need for efficient railroad operations following America’s entry into World War 1 in 1917. The existing network was struggling to cope with the additional traffic generated and many railroads were already in receivership before the outbreak of war. To deal with this and to ensure efficient operations, the entire system was nationalized for the duration and the USRA set about cutting duplicated services and streamlining operations, in the process ordering the construction of over 100,000 railroad cars and more than 1,900 steam locomotives, all of new, standard USRA designs. However, before many of these locos could be produced the war ended, although deliveries continued into 1919. The USRA was finally wound up by Congress in 1920.

The legacy of this scheme was twelve types of loco, from the humble 0-6-0 switcher to massive articulated 2-8-8-2’s, all of which were later absorbed into existing railroad companies and many of which were perpetuated by the works that built them. The specification for these classes included many modern fittings such as pneumatic firedoors, dual gauge glasses, power reversers and, on the larger designs, mechanical stokers. Our standard USRA 0-6-0 switcher was built by Baldwin and ALCO and the batch eventually numbered 255 examples with additional copies being produced after the war. Sitting on 4’ 3” drivers and with a tractive effort of 39,100 lbf these little engines could punch well above their weight and were to be found right across North America, from Texas to Canada, California to New York. This model is equipped with a Vanderbilt tender, the cylindrical design of which saved weight and made for a stronger unit.
