The BR57 locomotive was actually based on the Prussian series G10 locomotive first built in 1910 and featuring an 0-10-0 wheel arrangement. Nearly 3000 locomotives were built. Prussia was the single largest territory in Germany until it was, as a state, abolished by the Nazis in 1934. During the war the German Wehrmacht used many BR 57's for the German War effort. Many were camouflaged and some were used in fully armoured Panzer Trains. The BR 57's stayed in service until the early 1970's Making it one of the longest surving German Steam Locomotives.
