BRAWA 40200 DRG BR06 tender 4-8-4 locomotive in black DC (HO scale 2-rail DC) Heavy 4-8-4 tender steam locomotive class BR06 of the German Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft DRG in black and red livery with eagles emblems. In order to top off the programme of “standard” design locomotives, the Deutsche Reichsbahn issued a re-quest for tenders to the locomotive industry in 1934 in respect of the construction of a four-coupled express train locomotive. The Krupp Company in Essen was awarded the contract to initially build two locomotives in this 06 series. Even during the project realisation phase, the Deutsche Reichsbahn’s interest in these giant locomotives began to wane, which explains the long construction period from 1934 to 1939. The Krupp Company delivered the two locomotives 06 001 and 06 002 in March and August 1939 in the DR’s colours at that time – a black body with red wheels and frame. The 06 series had driver wheels with a diameter of 2,000 mm and one front and rear bogie. The three-cylinder engine was designed for smooth running up to a maximum speed of 140 km/h. Coupled with the 5-axle T38St tender (not to be confused with the BR’s 01.10 tender, which has the same name), the BR 06 had a length including buffers of 26,250 mm, which made it the biggest German express train locomotive. The friction burden was 80 tonnes and the locomotive had a service load of 141 tonnes. The total weight of locomotive and tender was 224 tonnes.
